Where Family History Meets Ingredient Care
An origin rooted in inheritance
The formal name is Bachan's, from Bachan—the word meaning grandma. The founder and CEO, Justin Gill, used that family-centered name for the Bachan's Japanese Barbecue Sauce recipe that relatives carried for generations.
Justin Gill's Bachan, Judy Yokoyama, was born in Sebastopol, CA in 1936. Judy Yokoyama later faced a two-year displacement in a Japanese internment camp. Judy then ensured the recipe continued by teaching Japanese barbecue sauce making to Justin and his parents.
The table was part of Justin's everyday relationship with his Bachan, who lived on the same property, and with his grandfather. Cooking together preserved family customs while giving Justin a lived understanding of Japanese-American culture.
Justin learned work through the family landscape company and sharing through a holiday sauce ritual. A large batch was prepared at home, then he went with his father to hand bottled sauce to their customers.
Connection can begin with Bold, Fresh, Umami Flavor™
The family table keeps the Bachan's story moving. Each preparation can reopen an old memory and, at the same time, establish a custom for the generations that have yet to cook it.
